At the Gate of the Year

I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year
‘Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.’

And he replied, ‘Go  into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God
For that shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way!’

So I went forth and finding the Hand of God
Trod gladly into the night
He led me towards the hills
And the breaking of day in the lone east.

So heart be still!
What need our human life to know
If God hath comprehension?

In all the dizzy strife of things
Both high and low,
God hideth his intention.”

My prayer for all of you during this new year is that you might discover what it is to put your trust in God.  This poem by Minnie Louise Haskins has been one of my favorites since college.  As you stand at the gate of this new year, with all of it’s uncertainties and unknowns, I pray that you will have the courage to repudiate the known way and put your hand into the hand of God; for His ways truly are better than the known way.  As the poem so eloquently states, what need do we have to know what lies ahead when God Himself hath comprehension?  He knows what your future holds, and if He bids you to come to Him (as He does to us all) then come we must. For He is offering His protection, His provisions, His equipping and most spectacularly of all, His righteousness. Happy New Year… and may you put your trust in Him in 2009.

  1. Happy New year Aaron. I saw on the news that Portland was under a lot of snow. Sounds like us here in Cincinnati only we know how to drive in it :)

Thanks for all the updates. I stop by here a lot but don’t comment as much as I would like. Are you going to be in Florida again this year? I hope so. Happy New Year to you and your family.
